A lot of film buffs are ditching the sticky and cold cinemas of yesteryear for the comfort of their own homes and streaming platforms.
Thankfully, thanks to streaming giants like Netflix, movie fans can still get access to some of the best releases of 2023.
The Netflix Bangers Facebook group has had their say on what they feel were some of the best films to grace their phone, laptop and TV screens at home this year.
In no particular order, here are the top 10 films released this year fans said they were most enjoyed on Netflix.
Extraction 2
A sequel to Chris Hemsworth’s sleeper 2020 hit, Extraction 2 was able to win over fans a second time around.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Back from the brink of death, commando Tyler Rake embarks on a dangerous mission to save a ruthless gangster’s imprisoned family.”
Pain Hustlers
Pain Hustlers sees Emily Blunt’s Liza Drake enter a dangerous criminal underworld in a gripping crime thriller.
The film’s synopsis reads: “After losing her job, a woman who’s struggling to raise her daughter takes a job out of desperation.
“She begins work at a failing pharmaceutical startup, but what she doesn’t anticipate is the dangerous racketeering scheme she’s suddenly entered.”
The Deepest Breath
The Deepest Breath shows the harrowing trials free divers experience pushing their bodies to the limit for their extreme sport in this documentary.
The film’s synopsis reads: “A champion and expert safety diver seemed destined for one another.
“Despite different paths taken, they meet at the pinnacle of the free-diving world, experiencing the thrilling rewards and inescapable risks of chasing dreams through the depths of the ocean.”

The Mother
Jennifer Lopez continues to try her hand at acting and was able to win over Netflix viewers in 2023’s The Mother.
The film’s synopsis reads: “While fleeing from dangerous assailants, an assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she left earlier in life.”
Nowhere
Netflix continues to develop its international market and its 2023 film Nowhere opened viewer’s eyes to the talent coming out of Spain.
The film’s synopsis reads: “A young pregnant woman named Mia escapes from a country at war by hiding in a maritime container aboard a cargo ship.
“After a violent storm, Mia gives birth to her child while lost at sea, where she must fight to survive.”
A Man Called Otto
Tom Hank’s A Man Called Otto showcases he still has it as a leading star.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Devastated and lonely, a widower decides to take a drastic step.
“However, his plans are disrupted by a lively family that moves in next door.”
Nyad
Nyad is likely to become another sleeper hit of the year, and the true story of Diana Nyad has left many fans vouching for the flick.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Sixty-four-year-old marathon swimmer Diana Nyad attempts to become the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida.”
Race to the Summit
2023 seemed to be the year of documentaries showcasing the abilities of extreme athletic endeavors, and Race to the Summit does just that.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Fearless alpine climbers Ueli Steck and Dani Arnold enter into a death-defying rivalry to set speed records on the Swiss Alps’ great north faces.”
Plane
Plane stuck Gerard Butler and Mike Colter together in a surprisingly good action thriller that resonated with fans.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Pilot Brodie Torrance saves passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island – only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning.”
Jawan
Following the global success of RRR in 2022, film fans have begun starting to enjoy more quality films coming out of India, most notably action thriller Jawan.
The film’s synopsis reads: “A man is driven by a personal vendetta to rectify the wrongs in society, while keeping a promise made years ago.
“He comes up against a monstrous outlaw with no fear, who has caused extreme suffering to many.”

Viewers are calling new ‘bone-chilling’ Netflix true-story a ‘must watch’

If you are not quite in the festive mood enough to stick on a Christmas movie yet, then you may want to try this new ‘bone-chilling series’ on Netflix.
If you are a subscriber of the popular streaming platform, and let’s face it who’s not, then you’ll know it can be difficult to know what to put on.
Scrolling through each category on Netflix and finding something to watch is never easy, so seeing what others are talking about online is certainly helpful.
The current talk of the town is The Railway Men – The Untold Story Of Bhopal 1984, which tells the incredible story of brave railway workers who risk their own lives to help others after a deadly gas leak in the city.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “After a deadly gas leaks from a factory in Bhopal, brave railway workers risk their lives to save others in the face of an unspeakable disaster.”
Released on 18 November, The Railway Men – The Untold Story Of Bhopal 1984 is a mini-series consisting of just four episodes.
It stars a bunch of famous Indian actors, including R. Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon and Divyenndu.
And it of course tells an important side story to the Bhopal Gas tragedy – the world’s deadliest industrial accident.
The short series begins with the hours leading up to the disaster that killed 70 times more people than Chernobyl.
Many have flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to provide their thoughts, and it’s safe to say they are impressed.
“The Railway Men on Netflix. What a chilling and powerful show. Must watch for everyone,” one person wrote.
A second added: “The Railway Men – The Untold Story of Bhopal 1984 is.. bone chilling!”
The Railway Men – The Untold Story Of Bhopal 1984 currently sits at a respectable 67 percent Rotten Tomatoes score following its Netflix release.
Radhika Menon, from the Decider, penned: “While the series occasionally feels overstuffed by characters, its storytelling heart remains true to honoring the men that saved thousands in Bhopal in 1984.”
While Ready Steady Cut’s Jonathon Wilson wrote: “These themes remain prescient since technological advances not only create more ways in which miraculous things can be achieved but also more ways in which things can go calamitously wrong.”
The Railway Men – The Untold Story Of Bhopal 1984 is available to stream on Netflix now.
