Sophia Loren has been hospitalized in Switzerland after falling over in the bathroom and sustaining fractures to her hip and femur bones.

The 89-year-old star of classic Hollywood cinema lives in Europe where she is from, and was due to open a restaurant in Bari on September 26 but will now have to postpone as she recovers from the injury.

The news was shared by the Instagram page for her restaurant franchise, which bears her name and read: “A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures. Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation.

“Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery. #sophialoren @sophialorenrestaurant.”

She was due to receive honorary citizenship from Bari in the south-east of Italy, 267 miles away from Rome, where she was born.

Her husband Carlo Ponti died in 2007, while her two sons from the marriage visited her in hospital. Carlo Jr and Edoardo both made sure they offered her their support but she would have wanted her husband of 46 years there whilst she’s hurt.

“I miss Carlo a lot. Sometimes I feel so lonely,” she told People in 2009. “It’s not true that when time goes by, [pain] heals. It will be three years since he died. The first time I met Carlo, it was at a beauty contest. He had a wife, two children. I didn’t think it would happen. Little by little I knew he was the right person for me.”
