After three long years of filmmaking hiatus due to the trial in which he was acquitted against Amber Heard, his ex-wife, Johnny Depp returns to the big screen thanks to actress and director Maïwenn Aurelia Nedjma Le Besco, better known as Maïwenn.
The French film is based on the story of a young woman who becomes a courtesan to reach the upper classes of France. There she meets King Louis XV, played by Depp, who will become more than close to the monarch. Louis XV had lost the will to live but after meeting Jeanne, that all changes.
Their romance isn’t well received by the royal house and everything takes a 180 degree turn when the young woman arrives and begins living there, with their relationship not be accepted by many.
Return to the French monarchy
The film focuses on a past era of France depicted from the perspective of a humble person, who evolves to become someone in a royal house. There, she maintains her status in the nobility, surviving all the controversies of the upper class.
The film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival and made waves given it signalled the return of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor.
King Louis XV, known as Louis the Beloved, died before the start of the French Revolution and was known maintaining a good relationship with the nobility.
One of the actors that will attract the most attention is Diego Le Fur, who plays the Dauphin, the successor of Louis XV.
