Jennifer Coolidge’s beautiful Golden Globes speech about friendship and support left us all in tears
The actor opened up about her career struggles and thanked Mike White for casting her in a role that opened new doors for her.
The results of the Golden Globes awards are in and one of the shows that scored big on the night was “White Lotus.” The 80th annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles featured Jennifer Coolidge as one of the night’s highlights as she both presented an award and took home a trophy of her own. For her portrayal of Tanya in HBO’s “White Lotus,” Coolidge took home the prize for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series/Anthology or Motion Picture at the 2023 Golden Globes.
However, her winning the award was not the only thing that was the highlight of the event. She went ahead to an unfiltered and well-delivered speech that made the show creator Mike White cry, reported The Vulture. She referenced her own personal career and cited “White Lotus” as a turning point for her. “It really means a lot. Thank you. Wow. “I just want to say, some of the people in this room, there were like five people that kept me going for, you know, 20 years with these little jobs. And Ryan Murphy, you were one of them. It’s these little jobs that kept me going.”
She then recalled that she wasn’t able to deliver a speech at the Emmys and many things left unsaid involving Mike White. She said, “I just want you all to know that I had such big dreams and expectations as a younger person, but what happened is they get sort of fizzled by life and whatever,” she said, before adding a few jokes in as well. “I thought I was going to be Queen of Monaco even though someone else did it.” She added that she had “giant” ideas and aspirations, however, life took a different run. In the middle of everything it was Mike White who gave her hope that anything is possible.
She continued, “You’ve given me a new beginning. Even if this is the end, because you did kill me off, even if this is the end, you changed my life in a million different ways.” Her character was killed off towards the end of Season 2 but she devoted her success and popularity to White. “My neighbors are speaking to me and things like that. I was never invited to one party on my hill, and now everyone’s inviting me! I just — you know, it’s to you, Mike White.”
Coolidge then went ahead to tell everyone the kind of person White is, she said, “He is worried about the world, he’s worried about people, he’s worried about friends of his that aren’t doing well, he’s always worried about people, you’re worried about animals, and he really is one of the greatest people.” She added, “He gives me so much excitement to be — you make people want to live longer, and I didn’t.” The actress concluded her speech by saying, “So anyway, I just want to say, Mike White, I love you to death. I just want to say, this is a real fun night, thank you. Thank you!”
White can be seen smiling with tears in his eyes and started crying while Coolidge honored him on the stage. Their beautiful bond was highlighted in the brilliant show that they created together.
