Is Gwyneth Paltrow Quitting Hollywood?

Gwyneth Paltrow made her acting debut in 1989, appearing in High, a TV film her father directed. After that, Paltrow began acting alongside her mother, Blythe Danner, in stage performances at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. But she didn’t make her big screen debut until 1991, when she starred in the musical romance film Shout alongside John Travolta.

Since then, the actress has appeared in many successful movies and TV series, including Steven Spielberg’s HookSe7en, Emma, and Shakespeare in Love, for which she won an Academy Award. Most recently, Paltrow played Pepper Potts in many movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the actress seems to have taken a break from Hollywood. While Paltrow has done some voice acting work for several movies and shows, her latest acting credit dates back to 2020. In a recent interview, the Academy Award-winning actress revealed whether she’s planning to retire from acting altogether.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s last acting credit was a small role in the Netflix comedy-drama series The Politian, in which she played Georgina Hobart from 2019 to 2020. Since then, Paltrow has seemed to quietly have taken a break from acting. She did some voice acting for the 2022 She Said and for the latest season of American Horror Story. However, she hasn’t appeared in any new show or movies since The Politician.

In fact, the actress announced she was retiring from acting in 2020. “I think that when you hit the bullseye, when you’re 26 years old and you’re a metrics-driven person who, frankly, doesn’t love acting that much as it turns out,” Paltrow admitted on SiriusXM’s podcast Quarantined with Bruce at the time. “I sort of felt like, well, now, who am I supposed to be? Like, what am I, what am I driving towards?”

“Part of the shine of acting wore off, you know, being in such intense public scrutiny, being a kid who’s like living every breakup on every headline, like being criticized for everything you do, say and wear,” the actress and businesswoman further explained. Since quietly retiring from acting, Paltrow has seemed to focus more on her business ventures and her family.

Gwyneth Paltrow Has A Massive Net Worth Thanks To Work Away From Hollywood

A good part of her net worth comes from her acting career. For instance, the 2003 box office flop, View from the Top, earned Paltrow about $10 million. Plus, Forbes reported that the actress earned close to $19 million for her role in Iron Man 3.

In addition to acting, Paltrow made good money out of endorsement deals. Since 1995, Paltrow has been the face of Estée Lauder’s Pleasures perfume. She also was the face of major fashion brands such as Coach, Max Factor, and Hugo Boss.

However, it seems that Paltrow’s biggest source of income is her business ventures. Paltrow is the founder and CEO of the lifestyle and wellness company GOOP, which was valued at over $250 million in 2018. The company sells everything from clothes to beauty and sex products. As a GOOP ambassador, Paltrow has also written several cookbooks and starred in the Netflix documentary Sex, Love & Goop.

In recent years, GOOP has been the center of many controversies. In 2020, the company was sued for false advertisement by the State of California, costing Paltrow over $145,000 in legal fees. And, in 2022, GOOP was bashed for having a toxic culture. Because of these incidents, it’s not clear whether Paltrow will remain the face and CEO of the company for long.

Given the recent backlash it’s faced, Gwyneth Paltrow has announced that she plans to step down from GOOP. Not only that, but the former MCU star also admitted that she’s planning to retire from Hollywood for good.

In a recent interview for Bustle, Paltrow announced her plans to sell her wellness empire in the future. “We’re not ready to sell yet. I need a few more years,” the actress explained, adding that, after finally selling GOOP, she plans to “literally disappear from public life. No one will ever see me again.”

The actress admitted that, despite coming from a family of actors and filmmakers, she’s never really enjoyed being a celebrity. However, she really enjoyed founding GOOP, especially the “creating, collaborating, being struck with new ideas, innovating, thinking ahead, strategy, vision” side of the business.

As for her plans for the future, Paltrow admitted that she wants to focus more on her family life moving forward. “My son and stepson are both seniors in high school, and sometimes I feel like the college process is a full-time job in and of itself. So I’m trying to keep the domestic stuff on track, and we have a lot going on at the company… So I’m just f*cking up. I’ve burned three things in the oven this weekend, just stuff like that, where you’re like, ‘What the f***?’” No one can blame her for wanting to take a much-needed break.
