Drew Barrymore Explains Why Adam Sandler Made Her Emotional When She Rewatched ‘The Wedding Singer’ For The First Time In 25 Years
Drew Barrymore recently went viral for sobbing while rewatching The Wedding Singer — and on this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress revealed exactly what triggered such an emotional response to the iconic rom-com.
Barrymore kicked off the episode by interviewing Masters of the Air stars Austin Butler and Callum Turner, who admitted that they are big fans of The Wedding Singer.
“I’m so glad you’re not Julia Gulia,” Turner said, referring to her character’s almost marriage to her cheating fiancé Glenn Gulia (Matthew Glave). He added, “Adam Sandler saved you from that.”
According to Barrymore, it was Sandler’s performance as Robbie Hart that brought on the waterworks when she sat down to rewatch the movie for the first time since it came out more than two decades ago.
“I just rewatched it for the first time in 25 years because I feel like that’s weird to sit around and watch your own movies,” she said. “It’s too indulgent.”
Barrymore continued, “I saw it and it made me cry, too — mostly for Adam. He’s so sweet. He’s such a good person. Robbie Hart is such a kind gentleman. In this day and age of fast-paced romance, everything’s reduced down to a text. Boy did it make me emotional — the gestures, the big gestures.”
Turner then brought up those “big gestures” Sandler’s character made like “chasing [Barrymore] onto the plane” and adorably serenading her with the help of Billy Idol.
“I love that movie,” he concluded.
Earlier this month, Barrymore was rewatching the flick when she decided to post an emotional video to her Instagram page.
“We made such a good movie. I love you so much. Happy New Year,” Barrymore tells Sandler through tears in the clip, before joking, “What year was it that we met in the Newsroom [Cafe]? 1922?”
According to the star, she was on her way to a yoga class when The Wedding Singer came on the television.
“I love you so much @adamsandler,” she captioned the video. “The Wedding Singer came on my TV as I was getting ready to leave the house and I had to take in this moment and watch it.”
