Sophia Loren had to undergo emergency surgery yesterday (September 25) after suffering a fall at her home in Switzerland, it has been reported.
The 89-year-old Italian acting icon was rushed into surgery after she was said to have fallen in her bathroom, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
She is said to have sustained several fractures to her hip and one serious one to her femur, which required urgent surgery, an insider told the publication.
The source went on to say there was cautious optimism about the operation and the star’s recovery.
Loren is said to need a short period of convalescence after her treatment and a long recovery and rehabilitation.
Sophia Loren was last seen in public at a fashion show at the 80th Venice Film Festival .
The news of Loren’s fall was announced by an Italian restaurant the screen siren was going to be opening tomorrow (September 26) in the city of Bari.
Loren’s sons Carlo and Edoardo Ponit are said to be by their mother’s side in the hospital.
She is best known for her roles in Two Women, Marriage Italian Style, Arabesque and A Special Day.
Although she has pared back her commitments over the years, she has still continued to remain part of the entertainment industry.
The star continues to be hailed for her longevity and ageless beauty with her career spanning nearly 70 years.
Sophia Loren is considered one of Hollywood’s greats.
Her last role was in the film The Life Ahead on Netflix back in 2020 and was directed by her son Eduardo.
The Life Ahead earned her a best actress accolade at the David di Donatello Awards.
She was also the subject of a documentary titled What Would Sophia Loren Do? which was also released by the streaming platform.
Loren was last seen out in public on September 2 when she attended the Giorgio Armani One Night Only fashion show as part of the 80th Venice Film Festival.
She first started acting at the tender age of 16 back in 1950 after participating in beauty pageants.
The star has been named one of the greatest stars of classical Hollywood of all time by the American Film Institute.
During her career, she even met the late Queen Elizabeth II and has shared some royal insight.
Some of her most recent roles have included the short film Human Voice, the TV movie My House is Full of Mirrors and Nine.
